Copper Canyon Railway Tour

A visit to Mexico’s Copper Canyon would not be complete without experiencing the rail journey often called the “Copper Canyon Train”. The Chihuahua al Pacifico railway ~ "Chepe" ~ provides impressively unique access into Copper Canyon country. One of the most scenic railroads in the world, on its 420 mile run, the Copper Canyon train goes through 86 tunnels and over 32 trestles. From Los Mochis, located at sea level, it makes a sharp climb up the western slopes of the Sierra Madre through pine and oak highlands to heart of the Copper Canyon region Divisadero, then on to the grassy plains of the Chihuahuan desert.

The Copper Canyon railroad is marked every kilometer by a marker post. Kilometer Post Zero is in Ojinaga, Chihuahua (on the border with Presidio, TX) where the train first originated, going to Topolobampo, Sinaloa on the Sea of Cortez. Currently, the Copper Canyon train runs only between the City of Chihuahua and Los Mochis, Sinaloa.

It took 89 years from concept to final spike. The Copper Canyon railroad was planned in 1872 by Albert Owen, whose hope was to connect the mid-western states of the US with the Bay of Topolobampo as a short cut to the Orient. Many bankruptcies, the Depression and the Mexican Revolution prevented the accomplishment. The Mexican Government bought the railroad and the first train from Chihuahua arrived in Los Mochis in 1961, allowing tourist access to Copper Canyon region, an area previously inhabited only by the Tarahumara people.

Enjoy a brief scenic overview of a Copper Canyon Mexico tour that A Closer Look Tours offers. Rick Najera, The MEXICO Report correspondent, shows you what it's like to ride the Copper Canyon Train and Railway while taking in the beautiful panoramas of the Copper Canyon countryside. We hope you enjoy this virtual tour of traveling on the El Chepe train into Mexico's Copper Canyon in Chihuahua, Mexico.
