The annual migration of monarch butterflies to Michoacán, Mexico, is a remarkable phenomenon we’re lucky to witness. Our tours support conservation efforts to keep this magic available for generations.

During their stay in Michoacán’s Oyamel fir forests, monarchs cluster together in astonishing numbers. While individual counting is impractical, researchers estimate that each hectare hosts between 20-30 million butterflies. This clustering not only creates a breathtaking visual spectacle but also helps the butterflies conserve heat during the cool mountain nights.

The monarchs’ journey to and from Michoacán is increasingly affected by climate change. Extreme weather conditions, such as droughts in the southern United States, can significantly impact their migration success by reducing nectar availability. These climate-related challenges underscore the importance of conservation efforts across the butterflies’ entire range, from Canada to Mexico.

We have one departure left for the 2025 season, and it’s on February 17.
