Monte Albán, Oaxaca
Stunning Monte Albán, located atop a mountain overlooking Oaxaca, was the Zapotec capital for 13 centuries. This UNESCO World Heritage site boasts unique features like the carved stone figures once thought to be “dancers,” now believed to depict sacrificed enemy leaders. The site’s ball court lacks the stone rings found at other Mesoamerican sites, hinting at regional variations in this ancient game. Ongoing excavations continue to uncover new insights, with many housing complexes still buried in the surrounding hillsides.
