Tour Breakdown
OPTIONAL PRE-TOUR | The Place of the Gods (Teotihuacán and Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe)
Teotihuacán, built between 100 BC and 700 AD, once housed over 200,000 people, making it one of the most significant archaeological sites in Mesoamerica. Abandoned by the time the Aztecs arrived in 1200 AD, Aztec legend holds that the sun, moon, and universe were created there. During its peak, Teotihuacán was a powerful metropolis. Visitors can explore the Citadel, the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, and other monuments along the Avenue of the Dead. Later, visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico’s holiest Catholic shrine and a major pilgrimage site. The basilica houses a miraculous cloak bearing the image of the Virgin, which has baffled experts for centuries. This image inspired Mexico’s fight for independence and continues to draw millions of visitors annually. Pilgrimages to the basilica, which began in 1531, remain a testament to the enduring faith of Catholics in Mexico and Latin America.
